Position Purpose

This position reports to the Senior Project Specialist in Communications, Outreach and Marketing. The position will be used to increase equity among all residents of Dallas by communicating in the language of their preference by providing effective communication within the City of Dallas and throughout its 47 departments, providing oral and written communication from English/Spanish and vice-versa for various meetings, documents, and activities.
The Translator will work on requests and is expected to clearly communicate project progress to clients. The ideal candidate must be a creative translator, as well as an excellent writer/proofreader, proficient in both English and Spanish grammar, and will have a deep understanding of Hispanic/Latinx culture in USA.

Essential Functions
  • Translate both written and verbal communication from English to Spanish and Spanish to English.
  • Translate city-wide letters and documents.
  • Proofread other translations and provide feedback.
  • Regular, reliable and punctual attendance is an essential function of the job.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, and at least 2 years of translation and transcreation experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of the job position.

Certifications

American Translators Association (ATA) Certification, English to Spanish (desired)

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Ability to fluently read, write, and speak in English and Spanish
  • Translate, trans-create, edit and proofread copy for customer and prospect communication efforts including printed collateral, emails, web pages, scripts, audio, social media, etc.
  • Ensures all Spanish messaging reflects the City of Dallas voice and is relevant for our audience
  • Use his/her knowledge of regional differences across different Spanish-speaking countries and be able to produce translations that are acceptable to the widest possible audience
  • Make sound decisions about when accuracy and consistency should be the main goal in a translation and when a more creative approach to translation is needed (transcreation)
  • Help maintain Spanish translation brand standards and contribute to improve them
  • Experience in marketing and advertising, corporate communications, and/or community outreach
  • Maintain brand image, voice, identity and communication style in all translations
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Exceptional organizational, and interpersonal skills
  • Review Spanish-language content developed by agencies/other City of Dallas departments, as needed, to provide copywriting direction to maintain consistency with brand standards and ensure alignment with One Dallas strategy
  • Assist creative agencies in producing Spanish-language TV, RD and digital content
  • Enable cross-collaboration among teams working in Spanish-language content to make sure expertise and key information is shared to improve customer experience for this audience.
  • Balance competing priorities while meeting tight deadlines
  • Must possess a positive attitude
  • Must be detailed oriented– the kind of person who checks to make sure the translation is correct for our target audience
  • Must be self-motivated, able to multi-task, and able to work independently with limited supervision
  • Must have experience building trust through authentic, genuine, transparent communication
  • Must have integrity and a desire to contribute to the success of the City
  • Ability to effectively work and communicate with personnel from diverse cultures or backgrounds in English and Spanish
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others
  • Native Spanish speaker (mother tongue as Spanish) preferred
  • Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with all levels of management, city officials, vendors, other government agencies, other employees and the general public
